As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • All identifying information has been removed, and the abstract has been condensed to 250 words or fewer.

General Guidelines

Muslim Humanitarian Review (MHR) Journal is an international, interdisciplinary journal that publishes full length research articles, case studies, commentaries, research notes, and book reviews on a wide range of topics related to the area of Muslim humanitarianism. Submissions must be in English. MHR will not consider manuscripts that have been published or are under consideration elsewhere. All correspondence regarding manuscript submissions, as well as comments on editorial policy, suggestions for future symposium issues, and proposals for Special Issues, should be directed to the Managing Editor, Abdul Samad at absamad@iu.edu

Guidelines

Title Page: Include all authors' names, titles, affiliations, e-mail addresses, and a short (2-3 sentence) biography of each author.

Main Document: Remove all identifying information and include abstract, main text of article, appendices, endnotes, references, and tables and figures. Failure to do so will delay the review process.

Formatting Instructions:

  • Manuscripts should be no more than 8000 words including the main text, references, endnotes and any appendices. Major deviations from this requirement will result in manuscripts being sent back to the authors with a request to shorten the word length.
  • We encourage authors to adhere to the following word limits for their submissions:

    • Research Articles: Up to 8,000 words
    • Commentaries: Between 2,500 and 3,000 words
    • Case Studies: Between 5,000 and 6,500 words
    • Research Notes: Up to 4,000 words
    • Book Reviews: Up to 1,500 words
  • Use 12 point, Times New Roman font for all documents.
  • Follow the APA style for citations, reference list, and headings.
  • Include an abstract that is 150 words or less.
  • Include 4 or 5 keywords.
  • ANY direct quote requires a page reference or a reference to the name of the person and the date of the interview.
  • For transliteration, please use the IJMES Translation and Transliteration guide
  • Use footnotes only for substantive comments bearing on content. Mark consecutively beginning with numeral 1.
  • You are responsible for making sure that the uploaded manuscript consists of the complete text of the manuscript MINUS any identifying information in the title page, acknowledgements, and/or any running headers to allow blinded review. Please note: If you have used the “track changes” feature at any point during the composition of your submission, make sure to accept all of the changes before saving the final version that you will upload. This is also true for the submission of revised manuscripts. If you do not do this, reviewers may be able to see your name and comments, compromising the blind review system. If this happens, we will have to start over with new reviewers, significantly delaying the review process.
