Ronald Hayman lived in Germany for two years before going to drama school in London. His undistinguished career as an actor took him to weekly, fortnightly and three-weekly reps all over England and Wales. His career as a director was almost equally undistinguished. Only one production - a one-man show about Shaw - made it to the West End and Broadway. His books have been more successful. They include biographies of Kafka, Proust, Sartre, Brecht, Thomas Mann and Jung. He also wrote a series of critical books about contemporary playwrights including Beckett, Pinter and Stoppard. He has written plays for radio and the theatre. Playing the Wife was staged as Chichester with Derek Jacobi in the leading part.
