Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The authors have received all necessary approvals by the author's research ethics committee.
  • The authors have reviewed this journal for articles that address the issue(s) considered in the submitted manuscript. As authors draft their literature review, they are encouraged to include work published in this journal. If you have searched this journal and not found related work, please mention this in your submission letter to the editor.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format and is prepared for anonymous review.
  • Where available, URLs and/or DOIs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. If selected for publication the editors retain the right to move figures, illustrations and tables to enhance readability.
  • The text adheres to bibliographic requirements: Please use the Accessible Style Sheet. (See Author Guidelines below.)
  • By submitting your article, you agree to review future manuscripts for JoSoTL. We recommend checking your profile to ensure your research interests around the scholarship of teaching and learning are accurately stated.
  • I have read and agree to the copyright terms of the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning as set forth in this copyright acknowledgement.
  • The author(s) certify that they have verified accuracy of any AI-generated content, whether integrated verbatim or paraphrased and whether cited or not, and that they have verified accuracy of citations. Authors who use any AI-generated content should indicate in a cover letter that they have done so.

Based on recent updates to our rolling publication model and accessibility guidelines, we are transitioning solely to the Accessible Style sheet starting with our January 2026 issue.

  • As of January 1, 2026, we ask all authors to use the Accessible Style Sheet to format their final manuscript. the

Please note that the style sheet differs slightly from APA format on the title page only, specifically in the way the author(s) and institution(s) are listed.

We want to emphasize the necessity of ensuring your manuscript is prepared for anonymous review according to the style sheet before it will be reviewed. Failure to anonymize your manuscript or adhere to the required style sheet may result in your submission being declined for review.

Additionally, we are providing the review forms that reviewers use for each individual category. 

JoSoTL uses the rules of APA Style 7th Edition, including the use of "they" to refer to a specific person who does not identify with a gender-specific pronoun. 

Copyright Notice

  1. Authors retain copyright and grant the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSoTL) right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License, (CC-BY) 4.0 International, allowing others to share the work with proper acknowledgement and citation of the work's authorship and initial publication in the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
     
  2. Authors are able to enter separate, additional contractual agreements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

  3. In pursuit of manuscripts of the highest quality, multiple opportunities for mentoring, and greater reach and citation of JoSoTL publications, JoSoTL encourages authors to share their drafts to seek feedback from relevant communities unless the manuscript is already under review or in the publication queue after being accepted. In other words, to be eligible for publication in JoSoTL, manuscripts should not be shared publicly (e.g., online), while under review (after being initially submitted, or after being revised and resubmitted for reconsideration), or upon notice of acceptance and before publication. Once published, authors are strongly encouraged to share the published version widely, with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
