As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • I attest that this work has not been previously published and is not under consideration elsewhere.
  • I confirm that text is: Word (.doc) file format; double-spaced; 12-point font; 1-inch margins, paginated top right.
  • If my submission includes illustrations, they will be uploaded as a individual TIF or JPG files and are "print quality" resolution (at least 300 dpi).
  • I have signed and uploaded either Consent to Publish (for Scholarly articles, non-fiction essays, and interviews) or a Permission to Publish (for Creative works).
  • I have included on my OJS system profile page my 50-word biography as well as all my contact information.

OVERVIEW

Chiricú Journal is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal featuring Latinx humanities. Published twice yearly by the Indiana University Press, it is available electronically via Project MUSE and JSTOR (both by subscription) or via individual annual subscription for $19,99 for full-color print issues. We feature scholarly articles and creative works (including poetry, artwork, fiction). We also welcome non-fiction essays, interviews, and roundtable proposals. Submissions may be in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or Indigenous languages. Most issues engage a specific theme from multiple disciplinary and artistic frameworks. See our homepage for the most recent Call for Submissions.

REQUIREMENTS

Scholarly articles and non-fiction essays: Word limit: 9,000 words (including notes and works cited). Style must conform to most recent edition of MLA, APA, or Chicago style guidelines. Abstract required (limit: 200 words). Keywords required (limit: 7 keywords). Indicate style, place abstract and list keywords on page one of submission.

Book, film, or exhibit reviews: Word limit: ~750-1,000 words. Reviews accepted by solicitation or can be submitted without invitation. 

Interviews: Word limit: 7,000 words. We welcome interviews of artists, filmmakers, historical figures, and authors. Please provide a short introductory paragraph contextualizing the interview. 

Editorials: Word limit: 2,000 words. We will consider thoughtful commentary on current and historical events.

Creative submissions: Word limit: 7,000 words. Poetry, artwork, short stories, flash fiction, photo essays, and other forms of textual and visual art are welcome. The print area of this journal is 5.5" (wide) x 8.5" (tall). Consider these dimensions when formatting poems and illustrations.

Images for Scholarly Articles and Creative Works: Must be uploaded as separate JPG or TIF files, and must be 300 dpi (pixels per inch) or higher. Essays that include images must indicate where, within the text, the image should be placed by inserting the designation “(fig. 1),” “(fig. 2),” etc. Be sure to provide all caption information, including title of illustration (if any), its creator, year, and source. Procurement of image copyrights is the responsibility of the submitter.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

To ensure a double-blind review process, all articles are submitted electronically via Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. To guarantee anonymity, your name must not appear anywhere on your paper.

At the time of submission, you must submit a Scholarly Work Consent to Publish Agreement (for Scholarly articles, non-fiction essays, and interviews) or a Creative Work Permissions Agreement (for Creative works).  Instructions: Download the appropriate form, fill out, and upload along with your submission.
