Chiricú Journal is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal focusing on Latina/o humanities. Published twice per year by the Indiana University Press in conjunction with the Latino Studies Program at Indiana University, it is available electronically via Project MUSE and JSTOR (both by subscription) or per issue by print-on-demand. We invite submissions of scholarly articles as well as creative work, including poetry, short stories, essays, interviews, photography and graphic illustrations. Submissions may be in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or Indigenous languages. Each issue engages a specific theme from multiple scholarly and artistic perspectives.

Formatting Requirements

All submissions should be double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, 1-inch margins all around. These apply to including quotations, notes, and the bibliography. Page numbers should be included in the upper right corner.

Feature articles and essays must conform to the most recent MLA, APA, or Chicago style guidelines. The preferred length of scholarly articles is 6,000-10,000 words, including the bibliography and notes. Academic essays must include an abstract of no more than 200 words. At the top of the first page of your submission, include your abstract and also indicate which style (MLA, APA, or Chicago) you have adopted.

Book and film reviews by solicitation only, should be 500-1,000 words. Exceptions will be considered for review essays.

Interviews may be up to 8,000 words in length. We welcome interviews of artists, filmmakers, historical figures, and authors.

Commentaries and editorials can be 1,000-2,000 words. Critical essays on current and historical events are welcome.

Creative submissions should not exceed 10,000 words. Short stories, flash fiction, poetry, photo essays, and other types of creative works are encouraged.

Images for both scholarly and creative works should be uploaded as separate JPG, TIF, or EPS files, along with a separate DOC file containing related text and captions. All illustrations must be 300 pixels per inch (dpi). Authors submitting images with text should indicate within the text where the image should be placed by inserting the designation “(fig. 1),” “(fig. 2),” etc. at the end of the sentence referencing the image. Please also provide any caption text in a separate document. The procurement of all image copyrights is the responsibility of the submitter.

To ensure a double-blind review process, all articles are submitted electronically via Open Journal Systems. Please follow the instructions at this link to submit. To guarantee anonymity, your name must not appear anywhere on your paper.

At the time of submission, you must submit a scholarly Consent to Publish Form (for scholarly pieces only) and/or a creative Consent to Publish Form (for works of fiction, and for illustrations if your submission includes them). Download the forms needed from the links, fill out, and submit as additional material with your submission.

Please direct questions to John Nieto-Phillips (Editor) at chiricu@indiana.edu; or phone (812) 855-8589.
