Abstract

A study involving 20 married couples was conducted to find the best predictors of marital interaction. The age of the couple, the length of marriage, and the number of children living at home were seen as possible predictors. The Parental Stress Index was completed by those couples who had children living at home, while all couples completed a biological background information sheet. Each couple recorded two conversations between themselves. Each couple's interaction was given a rating of affection and hostility. Results showed the number of children as predictive of fewer compliments, high hostility ratings, low affectionate ratings, and more disagreements. Shorter lengths of marriages were predictive of more negative statements, while longer marriages predicted low interaction rates.
