FACTORS AFFECTING THE DISCIPLINARY CHOICES OF PARENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study analyzes a 2000 survey (N=70) which examines what factors contribute to parents' methods of discipline. Race, gender, level of education, and life experience with children were evaluated to determine whether a parent utilized spanking vs. time-outs as a result of these factors. Non-random sampling was utilized and parents from two counties in Indiana and California served as participants in the study. It was predicted that White parents with higher levels of education and life experience would not spank, and African-American parents, as well as parents with lower levels of education and life experience, would spank. The results, however, were quite surprising.
