Abstract

This paper is about the genre of tragedy and how Henry James' book, The Portrait of a Lady, is a representation of tragedy. Many critics view his main character, Isabel, as a tragic figure. This is, however, not true. I prove this by first searching for the meaning of tragedy, and second, analyzing Isabel's character and studying theoretical pieces on the topic. In order to be a tragic character, life, in a sense, has to be over with - completed. Isabel's is not. It is for this reason that she is the nontragic in a tragedy. Based on this information, I found that although Isabel's marriage and situation in life are tragic, they have not consumed her person; therefore, she is the non-tragic in a tragedy.
