We Can Do It: The Use of Empowerment Imagery In Marketing and Advertising
Main Article Content
Abstract
Advertisements are inescapable, and today they are as American as apple pie. Since advertisements are so common and almost universal to the American experience, how can they be used purposefully by historians? This brief essay explores the use of empowering imagery in advertising and how it can be used by historians to illustrate historical social and cultural trends within affluent societies. Special attention is given to feminist movements and how these advertisements illustrate concepts of empowerment during the time when they were produced.
