Abstract

This study examines the perception and identification of Mandarin sibilant fricatives by American English speakers who are learning Mandarin. We investigate whether AE speakers who are learning Mandarin can identify Mandarin sibilant fricatives and whether the performance is affected by the amount of L2 experience, L1 background and linguistic contexts. This study used the perception experiment software-OpenSesame (Mathôt et al, 2012) to conduct an identification experiment. The results show that AE speakers learning Mandarin can identify Mandarin sibilant fricatives, and that the amount of L2 experience, L1 background and linguistic contexts play important roles in the identification of Mandarin sibilant fricatives by AE speakers who are learning Mandarin.
