TMR 98.01.01, '98 Inaugural Statement and Masthead
Dear Subscriber,
The past year has seen some momentous changes for The Medieval Review, not the least of which was the change of the journal's name from BMMR. We would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the events of the past year, and to thank you for your support.
In 1997, TMR published reviews of 96 books, still only a fraction of the books published on medieval topics. We are building connections with presses, and are particularly interested in non-American publishers; we encourage you to inform us of books that you think should be reviewed.
May 1997 also saw the inauguration of our website, located at http://www.hti.umich.edu/b/bmr/tmr.html. All reviews from 1993 (the beginning) to the present are archived on the website, and can be viewed, searched, and printed. We are extremely grateful to the Humanities Text Initiative at the University of Michigan, which maintains the site for us, and in particular to John Price-Wilkins, Chris Powell, and Nigel Kerr for their extraordinary assistance in setting up and maintaining the site. Many people have been accessing the site. In November, over 8,000 requests for information, or "hits," were received from 36 countries. If you have not yet looked at the archive, we encourage you to do so, and, of course, to send your comments to us.
The number of subscribers to TMR has been steadily increasing; as of December 31, 1997, we were approaching 2100 subscribers (including both TMR and BMR subscriptions), and, as with the presses and the website hits, are pleased to note an increase in non-American addresses. Please tell your friends, colleagues, students, and professors about us, and encourage them to subscribe!
We have many people to thank for their assistance to us in the past year. First and foremost, thanks go to Eric Owen and his successor Scott Bahrke, our editorial assistants, for their outstanding work in maintaining our day-to-day operational procedures. The support from people at WMU continues to be overwhelmingly positive; notable for their contributions are Paul E. Szarmach, Director of the Medieval Institute; Elise Jorgens, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; and Ronald Davis, Chair of the History Department. We wish to thank our advisory board and review editors for their diligence and enthusiasm, and our reviewers, without whose work there would be no journal. Our fellow-editors at the Bryn Mawr Classical Review, Rick Hamilton and Jim O'Donnell, have been consistently supportive. And, of course, we thank you, the subscribers; we are daily heartened by your enthusiasm for the Medieval Studies on the internet.
