Arthur J Stewart, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education

Biosketch

Art Stewart earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University before working for 17 years as a staff scientist, group leader, senior scientist and science leader in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Environmental Sciences Division. He then earned his M.S.Ed degree at the University of Tennessee and became a project manager at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).  Within ORAU, he directed, for three years, the Department of Energy’s Academy Creating Teacher Scientists program, the Appalachian Regional Commission – ORNL Science Technology Math Partnership program, and the Tennessee Science Bowl.  Dr. Stewart now manages the Advanced Short-Term Research Opportunity and GEM programs for Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Postdoctoral Research Associates program for Savannah River National Laboratory. In addition to his passion for quality science education, Dr. Stewart enjoys writing. He has served as an editor, associate editor, and editorial board member for several professional scientific societies and he has authored or coauthored about 80 peer-reviewed technical articles and book chapters; 12 of his publications have 60 or more citations each. He also has authored five books of “science flavored” poetry, each of which has received excellent review. His poems have been published in dozens of anthologies and literary magazines. He is a Tennessee Poetry Prize winner, a prize-winning essayist, and a 2013 inductee into the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame for poetry.
