As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • Because the publisher supports Microsoft Word, author must save the file as Plain text (ASCII) or Rich Text format (RTF) if using another application.

  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

  1. Length is flexible, ranging from 2500 to 5000 words (10 to 20 double-spaced, typed pages including references), plus photos, charts, tables, and illustrations.
  2. Only completed work should be submitted. The editors cannot provide feedback on work in progress.
  3. Submission of work to this journal will be taken to imply that it presents work not under consideration for publication elsewhere. On acceptance of work, the authors agree that the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article have been given to The South Shore Journal.

In terms of formatting, the journal has the following guidelines:

  1. Because the publisher supports Microsoft Word, author must save the file as Plain text (ASCII) or Rich Text format (RTF) if using another application.
  2. Contributions should be double-spaced, including all notes and references.
  3. Page numbers should be placed in the upper-right corner, paragraphs should be indented, and all illustrations and tables should be labeled and captioned accurately.
  4. Use Times New Roman, 12 point font, left-justified text, and bold-faced headings.
  5. Follow APA or MLA citation styles. If documentation is required and not present, the submission will not be sent to reviewers.  Manuscripts not meeting accepted professional standards will be immediately returned to author.
  6. Every submission must include a title page with the following information:
    • Title of the work.
    • For each author: Name and affiliation, postal address, email address, telephone number.
    • A brief (75-100 word) abstract.
  7. Do not include any author's name on any page other than the title page. Please number the pages.

The South Shore Journal accepts book review submissions that have not been previously published or that are not currently under consideration by other journals or publications. The book’s content and the review need to demonstrate relevance to the region to be considered for publication. Book reviews may vary and range from 1,000 to 2,500 words.

The editors of the The South Shore Journal seek letters in response to previously published pieces, to facilitate dialogue between authors and readers.
