Abstract

This document examines various elements regarding education for democratic life (EDL) in the basic level education that has been developing in Mexico since the 1990s. It emphasizes social participation (SP), conceived as a key resource not only for promoting active civic life in the school or amongst students, but also for fostering tighter relations between schools and families and their participants. While some advances in EDL are acknowledged, a comprehensive policy that takes into account the development and consolidation of SP, based on strengthening both institutions, is still absent.
