Abstract

Continuing under the dichotomy of merveilleux chrétien and merveilleux féerique outlined in earlier publications, we examine the action of Baudouin de Sebourc. The divine destiny of Baudoin in its details is related to the Holy Blood, its white lion protector, and a visit to Heaven and to Hell. The merveilleux féerique occupies, on the other hand, a modest portion of the narrative. For example, the knights do not have magic power, except perhaps for Baudouin in his prodigious ability to sire offspring (thirty, all excellent knights). The primary example of lay magic lies in Old Man of the Mountain’s daughter, an enchantress, who is not only magically beautiful but also able to foresee the future. In spite of its complex didactic Christian itinerary and message, Baudouin also contains its comic moments, though the Christian marvelous far exceeds the few magic creatures, stones, plants and places throughout the work, due perhaps to the incredible beauty and seduction of its hero—almost as magic as God-given.
