Abstract

This study is a secondary analysis of data from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey. The survey, which is administered every three years, asks students questions on their opinions, health, behavior, activities, and experiences. This study compares youth whose parents have never been incarcerated, were previously incarcerated, or are currently incarcerated. The effects on the behavior of youth after the incarceration of a parent or guardian can lead to incarceration of the youth or lesser punishment by other authoritative figures besides the criminal justice system.
