Abstract

This paper explores the academic and emotional benefits of using facility dogs in elementary school classrooms. When facility dogs were introduced to classrooms, students were found to have an increase in academic achievement, feel significantly calmer in academic settings, and enjoy coming to school. The facility dog was found to be the most beneficial for students with disabilities and kindergarteners. Teachers also reported that they benefit from the emotional support that a  facility dog brings to the school setting. There are challenges that complicate bringing a dog into the school setting, but these issues can be manageable with additional effort from teachers, administration, and the facility dog’s handler.
