Abstract

"Introduction: The hum of the HVAC system reverberates around the corners of my classroom as I look from face to face, curious about the extent to which my students are engaging with their writing. In two weeks they will submit the most intellectually challenging and lengthiest piece of academic writing of the semester, and so it is a high-stakes and intimidating obstacle for many of them. They are all the type of student who value grades and who want to achieve some level of success in their academic writing; and yet, I see seeming indifference among a handful of my students as they wrestle with their priorities." The article describes a study of writing environments and studsent perceptions.
