First Year Mandated Housing for First Generation Students

Abstract
This paper looks at whether mandated first-year housing policies enhance a sense of belonging for first-generation college students (FGCS). As institutions increasingly require first-year students to live on campus to promote engagement and retention, the growing population of FGCS raises important questions about the effectiveness and equity of these policies. FGCS often enter college with limited familial support, financial constraints, and less familiarity with campus systems, which can shape their residential experiences in distinct ways. Drawing on existing literature, this discussion explores both the benefits and challenges of mandated first-year residency for FGCS.
