The IR Archives: “Access” as a Model for Rethinking Institutional Research through Archival Principles

Abstract
In this paper, we think in terms of archival studies to reimagine the work of institutional research. We consider how the field of institutional research could operate differently if it conceived of “access” along the lines that archives do. By examining how the term “access” is used differently in each field, we find points of departure for examining the expectations of institutional research products differently. The paper provides an example for how the disciplines can connect their related practices by examining common terms. “Access” is just one example of rethinking institutional research as having archival considerations and is intended to extend that conversation into other areas of shared concern between the disciplines.
