What’s PAR for the Course? Essential Aspects of Participatory Action Research in Higher Education

Abstract
Participatory action research (PAR) in the field of higher education (HE) is expanding. The purpose of our qualitative methodological literature review (QMLR) is to understand how the field of HE employs PAR methodology and if research aligns with established PAR tenets. Our literature analysis identified three themes in HE research employing PAR: empowerment, flipping the script, and the tensions of PAR. After discussing these themes and the implications of PAR in HE, we conclude with a list of considerations for HE researchers considering using PAR as their methodology in future research.
