Abstract

Known for its history of defying conventions, norms, and standards, the LGBTQ community presents unique challenges to equity-minded practitioners looking to create change on their campuses. However, among the many challenges student affairs practitioners may face in serving trans and queer populations, the difficulty in defining identities within the broader LGBTQ community presents a more philosophical question that often gets overlooked. In this article, I offer a brief review of literature on assessments of the LGBTQ community in higher education as well as provide some initial considerations for ways practitioners can approach complexity with confidence.
