COMPUTER EXPERIENCE AND ANXIETY: OLDER VERSUS YOUNGER WORKERS

Abstract

To address organizations' growing needs for finding knowledge workers (i.e., those who have computer technology experience with software and/or hardware) this study examined whether experience or age was a better predictor of computer anxiety among workers. Based on earlier research, it was hypothesized that experience, but not age, would predict anxiety toward computers and computer technology. A questionnaire was given to employees from two temporary employment agencies in a small Midwestern city; fifty-six usable responses were received. Results confirmed experience to be a better predictor than age in a recent field sample of workers, thereby discrediting age stereotypes in the work environment. Implications of the results for future research are also discussed.
