Main Article Content
Abstract
Research states that former offenders have difficulty in obtaining and
maintaining employment. This paper presents quantitative research to
investigate what types of businesses (manufacturing, wholesale, retail
sales, and services) are most likely to conduct background checks. Also,
the number of employees employed at a business and if that same
business conducts background checks are referenced to establish possible
associated relationships. Additional elements that are discussed include
limited job options available, discrimination received from background
checks, repeat offenses associated with unemployment, and employer
policies. Findings suggest that 48.4% of manufacturing companies, 50.0%
of wholesale companies, 50.0% of retail sales companies, and 45.2%
service companies conduct background checks. Lastly, data suggests
larger companies that compose of 67-99 employees, (71.4%) and 100+
employees, (56.3%) are likely to conduct background checks.
