The Ties That Bind: Forming Parasocial Relationships with 'The Boss'
Main Article Content
Abstract
For many, music provides a source of escape, connection, or some other emotionally gratifying experience. By using this medium to satisfy needs, users form mediated relationships with artists in the process. Utilizing the framework provided by uses and gratifications theory (Katz, Blumler, and Gurevitch 1974) along with relational maintenance strategies, this research examines the development of parasocial relationships between iconic artist Bruce Springsteen and his fans through the use of music, while also briefly considering the impact these relationships may have in the political arena.
