Abstract

Instruction is known to facilitate pragmatic development, but rarely appears in foreign or second language curricula (Taguchi & Roever, 2017). This lesson introduces students to the appropriate politeness strategies needed to make a request via e-mail in Spanish, taking into account both the pragmalinguistics and sociopragmatics of writing e-mails. The lesson has five components: an introduction which familiarizes students with the topic, an awareness-raising component which directs learners’ attention to request strategies, explicit instruction of request strategies, an opportunity for production, and a self and peer reflection. Possible extensions and additional suggestions for assessment and reflection are also discussed.
