Thank you for your interest in publishing with the Indiana University Journal of Black Student Experience (IUJBSE)! We are so excited to launch the journal with this first issue. Please read the information below regarding the purpose and scope of the journal, author guidelines, and author eligibility.
Submissions close on Monday, May 15, 2024 at midnight.
Purpose and Goals of IUJBSE:
- Provide graduate students with a creative space to share their work that is not always welcome to other academic journals
- Encourage and strengthen the professional development of graduate students by providing academic support and opportunities to showcase their work
- Highlight and centralize Black narratives, livingness, and experience in anti-deficit perspectives
- Humanize and appreciate Black communities through multitudes of scholarship
Author Eligibility
- Must be a graduate or professional student (e.g. Master’s, PhD, MD, JD, etc.)
- Preference will be given to graduate students in the Indiana University system, but students from other institutions are welcome to submit
- Authors are allowed to co-author with faculty and other colleagues
- Authors may submit more than one manuscript Must agree to copyright notices and policies
Types of Work Accepted
- Empirical research (qualitative and quantitative)
- Conceptual/theoretical pieces
- Literature reviews
- Personal narratives
- Poems
- Visual art and photography
- Dramatic script and monologues
- ANYTHING that discusses Blackness in any capacity
Submission Guidelines
- Must be topical to Blackness in any capacity (e.g. Black student experiences, history, stories, etc.)
- 12 point Times New Roman font, double spaced
- No specifi c format is required, but format must follow the author’s discipline (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago, Harvard, Turabian, etc.) with appropriate citations
- Manuscripts must not exceed 30 pages including references, citations, and bibliography
- Must submit by the deadline; late submissions should reach out to the Editor directly at daaskew@iu.edu
