As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • The instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.


  1. Research papers written by graduate students that fit one or more of the topic areas of the journal will be accepted for blind review by the Editorial Board. While a paper is under review it may not be submitted to any other journal. Review time is approximately six weeks.

  2. Graduate students must serve as the primary author on the paper being submitted in order to be eligible to the journal. We will accept work that has faculty members as contributing authors; however, we stress the notion that this must be original graduate student work with the majority of the work load performed by the graduate student(s).

  3. Studies should not have been previously published anywhere else in which they ask the same question(s), use the same analysis, or present the same argument.

  4. The Illuminare is seeking papers that fit one of the following formats:

    1. Literature Reviews – research papers focused analyzing and/or connecting major developments within a particular research area or field.

    2. Traditional research manuscripts – papers focused on presenting new and empirical data and/or the presentation of new comprehensive theories or theoretical models.

    3. Dissertation or Thesis Abstracts – 3-5 page abstracts presenting or proposing dissertation or thesis projects.

    4. Briefs – following the Journal of Leisure Research briefs are short notes “featuring brief reports on studies involving (1) replication or failure to replicate previously reported results, (2) methodological contributions, (3) comment, rejoinder and rebuttal pertaining to previously published papers, and (4) original empirical data not adequate or sufficient for the development of a regular article but appropriate for a short note (typically less than 5-7 pages).”

    5. All papers must be submitted in a word document only (.doc or .docx). Please, no .pdfs.

    6. All papers must be prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.).

      1. Pages should be consecutively numbered starting with the title page.

      2. The title page should include the title, author’s name, and author’s affiliation.

      3. Abstracts are required for literature reviews, traditional research manuscripts, and briefs and should be no longer than 150 words.

      4. Double spaced

      5. References must be included with doi or stable urls.

      6. Tables and Figures should be included as a separate file (titles included in this document).

      7. 7. Papers and no more than 6,000 words in length (not including references).

      8. All papers must use inclusive, person first language avoiding language that could in any way be considered sexist, racist, or biased in any way.

      9. Authors cannot submit more than two articles per issue of the Illuminare where they are the primary author.

10.  Upon completion of the review process, authors will be contacted regarding any recommendations made by the editorial staff. This may include recommendations for minor revisions and resubmission; major revisions and resubmission; and rejection.  If you are asked to revise you will have approximately four weeks to revise and resubmit.

11.  All papers should be submitted to the Illuminare Scholarworks Site: http://scholarworks.iu.edu/journals/index.php/illuminare.You will need to first register for the site where you will create a username and password. From there, you will be able to login under the ‘author’ role, and click the tab that says ‘new submission’. This will take you through the submission checklist and copyright notification (Step 1), followed by a page to upload your paper (make sure you follow the procedures for blind review; Step 2). Once you move to Step 3, you include author information and metadata for the paper. Step 4 allows you to upload supplemental files such as a document with tables and figures. Step 5 is to finish your submission. You will receive an immediate email from the Illuminare account verifying that we have received your submission.
