How Does Family Engagement Impact Literacy Achievement?

Abstract

This program was designed to address the positive correlation between family engagement and literacy achievement. The goal was to support and develop literacy skills for families and educate them about the importance of active family engagement for their child’s literacy proficiency. The families participated in a weekly workshop for five weeks. The focus topics included interactive reading strategies, paired reading, working with words, vocabulary and print-rich environments, as well as ways to incorporate learning at home. This program helped school's efforts to engage families with students’ education, supported multigenerational learning, built and reinforced literacy skills, strengthened family engagement and boosted literacy achievement.
