Comfort Food in Activism: Sweet Potato Comfort Pie

Main Article Content

Christine J. Widmayer

Abstract

The author uses the concept of “performative intimacy” to discuss the work of Sweet Potato Comfort Pie, an organization that makes and distributes sweet potato pies to comfort those affected by racial violence or other hardship, and express gratitude to activists working toward racial justice. The pies also create an atmosphere of care and support for participants in Sweet Potato Comfort Pie’s programs, which host difficult discussions about white supremacy and systemic racism especially as they are manifested through police brutality and racial violence.
