The Life Histories of Caregivers in a Romanian Orphanage

Abstract
This thesis poses the question “What is the reality of working as a carer in a Romanian orphanage?” This research focuses on the working lives of four carers from Burcesti group homes orphanage, from the 1970’s until 2009 and also explores the lives of a director and therapist in a large orphanage, Taorescu. It examines changes that occurred in the orphanages before and after Ceausescu; how the caregivers’ roles have changed over time; how the outside world views carers; and the factors influencing how well the carers felt they were able to do their jobs.
The fieldwork for this research included participant observation in two orphanages; interviews with six care givers; and surveys completed by a total of fourteen carers, from both orphanages.
