1974-75 variables rewritten into 1982 format. Created during May-June 2021 by: Professor Emerita Ruth Clifford Engs Dept. Applied Health Science School of Public Health Rm 116 1025 E. 7th St. Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405-4801 engs@indiana.edu http://alcohol.iu.edu Researcher: Ruth C. Engs, Applied Health Sciences, Indiana University, Bloomington I. HISTORY: The 1974-1975 files collected during this academic year were corrupted with extraneous characters, such as “::m ::k e:::” which were eliminated by writing a short program. In addition, the two 1975 files on this site were written to conform to the 1982 file format. Separate files were written to compare behaviors and knowledge of alcohol items between the two time periods. But at this point in time (2021), the reason for separate cvalculations is unknown. For comparison between the 1975 and 1982 data sets, only items to be compared were selected out. Consequently, some variables are missing. The knowledge score was calculated in a separate program. II. PROCEDURE: The 1975 programs and original primary data no longer exists as they were on computer cards and optical scan sheets. However, a sample might be found in the IU Archive’s Engs collection. The knowledge score was calculated in a separate program. Go to http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17153 the original SAQ and the early 1981s for variables and also SPSS programs that illustrate calculations. III. SPECIFICS OF DATA: Data migrated from paper format in the following order: Paper surveys punch cards or IBM optical scan sheets > pre-unix main frame computer > Unix mainframe > CD-Rom and PC. All data and calculations used SPSS (software versions from 1983-1996) and was transferred to Unix via SPSS for Unix. IV. VARIABLES The following illustrates what variables are in what column for ALCB75 (drinking behaviors) that conform to 1982 criteria on the “first line.” Column 9=sex, 10-11 unknown, 12 coldiv or major in alphanumeric, 13 CLASS or year in school, 14 GPA, 15 Race, 16 Religion. Drinking behavior variables are in columns 18 to 40. They were re-coded from the original alphanumeric to numeric data (see SAQ original: http://hdl.handle.net/2022/17153) A.
