Dear Colleagues,

The Muslim Philanthropy Initiative (MPI) of the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy invites you to present at the 6th Annual Symposium on Muslim Philanthropy and Civil Society, organized by Indiana University’s Muslim Philanthropy Initiative. The Symposium will be held virtually from October 31 to November 4, 2022.

This year’s symposium themes include:

  • Muslim Philanthropy (zakat, waqf, charity, giving, volunteerism, NGOs, nonprofits, humanitarianism, etc.)
  • Religion, Pluralism, and Civil Society
  • Islamophobia and Religious Discrimination
  • Law, Religion, and Public Policy

The symposium will prioritize papers which touch on one or more of these themes with one day dedicated to each theme. We are especially interested in those papers that seek to expand the concept of Muslim philanthropy beyond monetary giving in order to consider the place of religious discourses, practices, and contexts in which Muslims engage civil society.

We ask that participants submit final versions of their papers for publication in the Journal on Muslim Philanthropy & Civil Society, an open-access journal published by Indiana University Press and co-edited by Shariq Siddiqui and Scott C. Alexander. All submissions will go through a double-blind peer review process before publication. The JMPCS is the first interdisciplinary, arts and humanities-based examination of this under-studied field. Those interested in participating should submit their paper abstracts by August 15, 2022, and a pre-recorded video presentation by October 22, 2022. Presenters will receive an honorarium of $250 USD.

Authors who submit their final papers to JMPCS by April 1, 2023, will receive an additional honorarium of $500 USD. If submitted by July 1, 2023, the honorarium will be $250 USD.

The Symposium is being held in partnership with the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the University Library at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis.

Please send submissions to the JMPCS Editorial Team (jmpcs@iu.edu) or reach out with any questions or concerns.
