As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

JIMS will include four to six scholarly research papers in each issue with reflective and rigorous scholarship about Islam and Muslims from multidisciplinary perspectives, including sections for book reviews and conference reports; film reviews; and a discussion and debate forum.

  • Manuscripts are to be submitted electronically to the online article system https://scholarworks.iu.edu/iupjournals/index.php/jims/;
  • Manuscripts must be author’s original research;
  • As a double-blind peer-reviewed academic journal, avoid including author’s name in footers or headers, and avoid citing personal references in the text or endnotes as this will identify the author to the referees;
  • Submissions should include a separate cover sheet (for administration purposes) with name of author, email, telephone numbers (cell and home), and current university or professional affiliation;
  • Manuscripts should be between 7,000 and 10,000 words (excluding endnotes);
  • Use Chicago Style Manual(16th edition) as the style for citations, and basis for manuscript preparation;
  • Abstracts: between 250–300 words (max) to be included at the beginning of each article;
  • Submissions should be in MS-Word format (double-spaced);
  • Transliteration of foreign words (Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Urdu, etc) are based on The ALA-LC Romanization Tables: Transliteration Schemes for Non-Roman Scripts, which is approved by the Library of Congress and the American Library Association.   • All bibliographical information and data to be cited in endnotes, not footnotes, and bibliography is not needed;
  • Author must guarantee that the submitted manuscript or similar version has not been submitted or published previously in any other journal or publication format, including websites;
  • If author wishes to submit article to another journal before the JIMS editors have acted on its acceptance, the author has to withdraw the article from consideration by JIMS;
  • JIMS and its sponsor, the North American Association of Islamic and Muslim Studies (NAAIMS), will not accept unsolicited book reviews, conference reports or film reviews;
  • JIMS and its sponsor reserve the right to reject materials submitted for publication that are not consonant with their goals and purposes, and mission statements;
