Abstract

One consequence of the 2004 legislation banning the wearing of the hijab in French secondary schools was that it drove some Muslim students out of the public education system. A law justified with reference to France’s much-trumpeted and supposedly inclusive secular values has thus had the effect of increasing demand for private Muslim schools.
