Principles of Education in Yorùbá Proverbs

Abstract

This paper delves into the indepth explorationof the principles of education expressed in Yorùbá proverbs which is a means to pass on traditions, beliefs and values fromone generation to another. It examines the principles of education found in Yorùbá proverbs, such as respect for elders, perseverance, power of knowledge and analyzed how these priciples are expressed and their implications on modern education. This paper examines ten proverbs related to education; discusses the meanings and implications of words and phrases used in them;examines the relevance of proverbs in Nigerian educational system and the diaspora. This paper seeks to uncover fundamental principles of education in proverbs, assess how these principles could be appliedto modern education. It concludes that these priciples can be beneficial to students, culture, Yorùbá in diaspora and the educational system generally.
