Abstract

This study examines the challenges in developing Yoruba language teaching materials for specific purposes. Creating authentic, field-specific resources is vital to sustaining students’ motivation in learning Yoruba. While past efforts mainly focused on developing terminologies in areas such as medicine, engineering, and legislation, little attention has been given to producing comprehensive instructional materials.

Using a qualitative approach, which includes interviews, observations, and document reviews, the study identifies major challenges: limited research, a lack of materials, contextual needs, colonial influence, and a shortage of trained teachers. Proposed solutions include conducting needs analyses, designing purpose-driven curricula, and revising government policies on indigenous languages. Findings suggest that addressing these issues will boost student enrollment, motivation, and the overall status of the Yoruba language.
