As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format, is double-spaced, uses 12-point Times New Roman font, and has page numbers in the upper right corner.
  • Feature articles, essays, and interviews must be 8,000-10,000 words. Commentaries must be 1,000-2,000 words. Book and film reviews must be 500-1,500 words (exceptions will be considered for review essays).
  • Authors must provide any illustrations and captions and are responsible for obtaining all permissions required to publish an illustration. Illustrations should be submitted as JPG files, preferably of at least 300 pixels per inch.
  • Ensure that the submission file is anonymized and no identifying information is contained. This allows for a proper Blind Review process.
  • Authors submitting images should be sure to indicate within the text where the image should be placed by inserting the designation “(fig. 1),” “(fig. 2),” etc. at the end of the sentence referencing the image. Please also provide any caption text in a separate document.
  • Submissions should be accompanied by a completed Black Camera Contributor Form, available on our website: https://blackcamera.indiana.edu/call/BlackCameraContributorForm.pdf
  • An endnote citation format is required for scholarly essays. Contributors should consult the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • An abstract of 150-250 words must be included.
  • Please include brief biographical statement, affiliation, and contact information in a separate document.
  • If a submission is selected for publication, a signed Memorandum of Agreement will be sent and must be signed before publication.
  • Black Camera reserves the right to make editorial and stylistic changes.
