Women in the Animated Film Industry: This Is a Man's World but It Wouldn't Be Nothing without a Woman or a Girl

Abstract

This study analyzes the sex of characters in popular animated film and those of their creators. These is an alarming gender disparity both onscreen and off. Men vastly outnumber women in the animated film industry and in the film characters that they produce. This research focuses on the correlation between the number of women involved in the production of an animated film and the number of female speaking characters as well as the amount of gender stereotyping depicted in the film.
