Abstract

At the request ofR. W. Armstrong of Indianapolis, Indiana, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology at Indiana University (GBL) conducted a Phase IA archaeological surface reconnaissance of 1.78 acres for the proposed replacement of Bridge No. 264 in Warrick County, Indiana. The bridge carries Warner Road over Cypress Creek, approximately 1 mile southwest of the town of Dayville, Indiana. The purposes of the archaeological reconnaissance were to: 1) identify and document cultural resources in the proposed project area; 2) if cultural materials were discovered, assess their potential for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS); and 3) make recommendations pertaining to the significance and future treatment of cultural resources within the project area. Fieldwork was performed on June 3, 1999 by GBL archaeologists Wendy L. Natt and Scott J. Shirar. No sites were found during the reconnaissance, and most of the project area was found to be completely disturbed or otherwise unsuitable for archaeological survey.
