Abstract

Shang Dynasty oracle inscriptions are the earliest voices we hear from China, dating from about 1250 BCE until the dynasty's end two centuries later. They speak to questions of religious thought and practice, social and political structures, and historical change. This primer can help students begin to learn how to read these texts.

Description

This brief primer is intended as a tool for students of early China interested in learning to read oracle texts of the Shang Dynasty (c. 1500-1045 BCE). It includes a set of six lessons that consist of selected oracle texts with detailed glosses and simple exercises, along with an introduction and supplementary materials.
