Abstract

Youths today are awash in new digital media, ranging from artistic applications for their iPads and iPhones, to new interactive exhibits at local museums, to the streaming of video and music. As young people begin to consume and produce so much digital media, what is our role as P–12 arts specialists, teaching artists, classroom teachers, administrators, and arts partner organizations to guide them in this environment? A recent report from the Wallace Foundation, New Opportunities for Interest-Driven Arts Learning in a Digital Age (Peppler, 2013a), lays a vision for educators to transition youths from being consumers to producers of new media through high-quality media arts education.
