The PURPOSE of the study was to examine the drinking behaviors and problems of a sample of college students from throughout the United States in the 1982-3 academic year. METHODS: A survey of 6115 college students from every contiguous state was conducted using the Student Alcohol Questionnaire and the Alcohol Attitudes Questionnaire.. The RESULTS revealed that 81.9% of students were consuming alcohol at least once a year and 20.2% were heavy drinkers (consuming 6 or more at any one sitting). A significantly higher percent of men, whites, first year students, individuals with low grade point averages, Roman Catholics, individuals to whom religion was not important and students attending college in the North Central part of the United States were Heavy drinkers or experienced problems related to drinking compared to other groups (p < .05). It was CONCLUDED that alcohol education on the college campus needs to be instituted.
