Abstract

Coal-slurry deposits (CSDs) are deposits of fine-grained refuse from coal-preparation plants. CSDs were mapped and their volumes were estimated using historical aerial photographs, geological records, and geographic information systems (GIS). The total area of mapped deposits was 2,765 acres, and the estimated total volume was 94 to 135 million cubic yards. Using a variety of assumptions, this may represent between 22 and 69 million tons of recoverable coal. Chemical analyses for 473 samples in the archives of the Indiana Geological Survey were also collected, mapped, and statistically analyzed.
