Federico Mompou's Cancion y Danza No. 6: A Transcription for Wind Band

Abstract

Cancion y Danza No. 6 is a piece of music written for solo piano by Catalan composer and pianist Federico Mompou. It is uniquely suited to be transcribed for wind band due to its length, form, tonal centers, contrasting tempi and styles, and its characteristic use of the compositional tendencies of its composer. The transcription of the work for wind band was completed with the goals of maintaining musical integrity of the original work, creating a substantive addition to the wind band repertoire, and increasing awareness and proliferation of the music of Federico Mompou. In addition to a detailed description of the transcription process, biographical information for the composer, a survey of his compositional characteristics and an analysis of the original piano work is included.
