Description

This project proposes a comprehensive beautification and placemaking plan for downtown Montgomery, Indiana, designed by students from the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design in collaboration with the Center for Rural Engagement. Inspired by the town’s rural character and historic architecture, the plan includes sustainable sidewalk redesigns, interactive public art installations, wayfinding systems, and outdoor gathering spaces. Materials such as Bonhomie Cement, white oak, brass, and permeable concrete were selected for their environmental benefits and local relevance. The design emphasizes community engagement, walkability, and aesthetic cohesion, aiming to revitalize Montgomery’s Main Street while honoring its cultural heritage. This project was completed in collaboration between students from the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design and the town of Montgomery as part of the 2024–25 Indiana University Sustaining Hoosier Communities (IUSHC) initiative, a program within the IU Center for Rural Engagement (CRE). It reflects original student work and recommendations. The views expressed are those of the students and do not represent IUSHC, CRE, Indiana University, or the town of Montgomery.
