Abstract
At the request of Duncan Robertson, Inc., the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University (GBL) performed a cultural resources survey for a proposed borrow pit near Butlerville, Jennings County, Indiana. A total of approximately O. 83 acres were investigated. This report describes the project area and presents the methods, findings, and cultural significance/clearance recommendations of the archaeological survey. The purposes of the archaeological reconnaissance were to: 1) identify and document cultural resources in the proposed project area; 2) assess the eligibility of these resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS); and 3) make recommendations pertaining to the significance and future treatment of cultural resources within the project area. Fieldwork was performed on March 26, 1999 by GBL archaeologist Wendy L. Natt. One prehistoric site, 12 Jn 340, was discovered and documented during the survey. Site 12 Jn 340 is a very light lithic scatter that likely represents a short-term camp site. The low density of artifacts, absence of diagnostic materials or fire-cracked rock, and severe erosion at the site indicate that 12 Jn 340 is unlikely to contain significant buried cultural deposits. 12 Jn 340 is recommended to be non-significant and ineligible for inclusion on either the NRHP or the IRHSS.
