Abstract

At the request of Charlier, Clark, & Linard, PC, the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University ( GBL) conducted a Phase Ia archaeological reconnaissance survey of the proposed location for reconstruction of State Road 25 over the Norfolk Southern Railroad, east of Delphi, Carroll County, Indiana. Approximately 5.2 acres were surveyed. The purposes of the survey were 1) to identify and document all of the cultural resources in the project area, 2) to evaluate any resources found with regard to their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures (IRHSS), and 3) to make recommendations for the protection of significant and potentially significant sites. Fieldwork was conducted September 2, 1999 by GBL archaeologists Mary E. Pirkl and Lee T. Fennimore. GBL archaeologists were met on-site by Mr. Richard Pearson of Chartier, Clark, & Linard, and the project area boundaries were flagged at that time. During the course of survey, one previously unrecorded archaeological site, 12 C 323, was discovered. 12 C 323, an isolated find, is considered to be non-significant and is recommended to be ineligible for inclusion on the NRHP and IRHSS. Cultural resource clearance is recommended for the project area, provided that all proposed earth-moving activities are restricted to the currently delineated project area boundaries.
