Description
This report provides a comprehensive revitalization plan for the Washington County Farmers’ Market in Salem, Indiana, aiming to transform it into a vibrant community asset. It includes survey findings from customers and vendors, a SWOT analysis, and actionable strategies to address key challenges such as limited vendor participation, low customer turnout, and inadequate marketing. Recommendations focus on securing sustainable funding through grants and partnerships, improving staffing by hiring a market manager, relocating the market to a more visible downtown location, and expanding payment options to include SNAP/EBT. The report also outlines marketing tactics—such as social media engagement, printed materials, and community partnerships—to boost awareness and attendance. Additional resources include templates for surveys, volunteer recruitment plans, and grant applications to support long-term growth and community engagement.
This report reflects original research and recommendations developed by students in SPEA-V 600 Capstone in Public and Environmental Affairs for the Washington County Farmers’ Market as part of the 2020–21 Indiana University Sustaining Hoosier Communities initiative. The views expressed are those of the students and do not represent the official positions of Indiana University, the Center for Rural Engagement, Sustaining Hoosier Communities, or the Washington County Farmers’ Market.
