Abstract
The object of this project is a to develop a methodology for creating preludes in the improvisational tradition to non-organ keyboard works from the period framed by C.P.E. Bach's Versuch über die wahre Art (1753/62) and Carl Czerny's A Systematic Introduction to Improvisation on the Pianoforte (1836). Using original preluding tutors, composed preludes, preluding collections, and composition treatises, this project provides guidance in creating preludes and supplies examples of preludes and interludes designed for nine different compositions, including solo, chamber, and orchestral works for keyboard, mindful of the expectations of modern performers and audiences. The objective of this project is to foster a reinvestment in improvisation in the classical realm, and to advance the endeavors of historically informed performers.
