Abstract

About 67% of the disciplinary proceedings brought against nurses are related to some form of chemical abuse. Therefore, it is important to determine drinking and drug use patterns for curriculum development with nursing students . A sample of 431 nursing students was drawn from a national sample of college students over three time periods between 1983-1987. Of all nursing students, over 72.4% had consumed alcohol within the past year. 7.6% were considered heavy drinkers (consuming 5 or more drinks once a week or more). No significant difference was found between the three time periods. It was recommended that baseline data be taken to determine changes and that alcohol education be a part of the curriculum.
